NATURE DISCOVERY IN MY BACKYARD REVIEWS

Mommy Goggles
October 2, 2008

We love reading books and we look forward to story time in our house. Tucker talks about what book he can 'read' every day! When we received the Nature Discovery “In My Backyard” book, he immediately sat down next to me and asked me to read it to him. The illustrations speak to him, as a child, and as a parent, I love how the book speaks to the child, yet it teaches him or her things such as:

  • What birds are in our backyards
  • Illustrations on how a dragonfly is born
  • What is on the ground when you sit down

And more! This is such a fun and learning book. We love and you know that you will too!

Growing Your Baby
October 8, 2008

Exploring around the backyard is something that all kids do. The only question is: Do they know what they are looking at?

Nature Discovery In My Backyard is a great book created by a mom, Rebecca Mattano, that will help your child identify some of the cool stuff they find. From identifying different varieties of butterflies and their lifecycle to helping differentiate between a maple leaf and a birch leaf.

Common flowers and birds are explained in a language that your child will understand.

Older kids will also benefit from the Nature Discovery Tips and Nature notes listed at the back.

“The pictures in this book are beautiful and my daughter loves pointing out the girl in each picture as I tell her what she sees. This book has become her favorite over Monster's Inc over the past few days and I couldn't be any happier.”

What's Hot for Tots and Moms Too!
October 16, 2008

When today's moms and dads were kids, exploring nature meant catching lightning bugs, creating an ant farm or making a mud pie. But with hot button topics like environment, sustainability, green and organic, today's little consumers will quickly need to become little environmentalists. Where to get started when your youngster is just starting to explore his world? Try the backyard!

Moms Most Traveled

Nature Discovery In My Backyard is a book written for preschoolers and early readers about the environment that is all around them.

I am striving to be more green, eco-friendly, and environmentally aware in my home. I have often wondered how I can pass these values on to my young children without frightening them with scary tales of greenhouse gases.

Nature Discovery In My Backyard is the perfect book for sharing lofty ideas about ecology with little ones.

The book follows a little girl who is exploring her yard. She finds interesting things like a butterfly, a praying mantis, a bluebird, and soft, green grass.

Things that captivate your child when you are outside together make for great “mini nature lessons.”

In keeping with my theme this week of trying to find ways to introduce my little urban babies to nature, I have a new book to tell you about: Nature Discovery in My Backyard.

This book is the first in a new series of environmental children's books. The book is written to provide a complete sensory experience as your explore your "backyard" with your children. Nadia who is nearly 3 enjoys the book because it doesn't just explore common elements of nature like trees and leaves, but elaborates by showing pictures of different kinds of leaves and about seeing unusual animals like ground hogs. Well, at least animals we don't typically see in the city!

The illustrations are colorful, but not cartoony. They are softened images of a young girl exploring the trees and grass and flowers in her backyard. In the back of the book you'll find tips for going on your own nature discovery as well as tips for educators and a section of nature notes in the back about some of the plants, animals and insects introduced in the book.

The Little Environmentalists is a company created by a mother of two with an impressive resume. You can read more about Rebecca Metanno here. She's an educator, environmentalist and a mom which makes her very aware of not only how important it is to educate our children about their environment, but she found a way to do it in a kid friendly format. Nature Discovery in My Backyard has become a tool for really discussing what we find as we wander the streets of our neighborhood here in Chicago. We may not have a lot of ground hogs and porcupines, but it doesn't keep us from exploring!

“At 15 months old, I already have a bookworm. We sat down to read this book and Evan was engrossed. The pictures in the book are great. They actually LOOK like the flowers, trees, and animals that they're supposed to! This book takes you on a journey with a little girl that is discovering everything that is around in your yard if you just open your eyes.”

As a homeschooling parent, I am always looking for new and fun ways to teach my daughter! We had a great & educational time with this book.

I really like that the book includes "Tips for Nature Discovery". Which for me opens up alot of ideas for "hands-on" science class.

A Book Blogger's Diary
November 2008

As a kid, the home I lived in had a huge backyard and an even bigger front garden. One of my earliest pleasures was to sit in the velvety grass and watch the butterflies and wonder at the shapes the clouds made. As I grew older, I began to climb trees and collecting the feathers of the various birds that flocked to our trees was a joyous activity. Nature was around me and I was in my element, enjoying it to the full. It's something I want for my own kids. But that's not easy these days what with the lure of Television and Xbox that hold the kids indoors. Which is why I was happy to accept when given an opportunity to review this book, which is something that seems to have come out of my own childhood!

December 2008

We received a copy of The Little Environmentalists' first book, Nature Discovery in My Backyard. I was impressed with how much information is included in what seems like an ordinary children's picture book! You can choose to read the basic story with its sweet rhyme about taking a closer look at things around you on a nature walk but the best part, to me, is the "Nature Notes" section in the back that gives you more in-depth information about all sorts of things you might find in your backyard. I didn't spend much time outside when I was a kid, so I felt like it gave me a little more insight into the kinds of questions my children might ask on a nature walk. Roo was mostly interested in seeing what the little girl in the story found in her backyard-bluebird, butterfly, praying mantis. She wanted to go outside immediately and find stufffor herself, which I took as a sign that the book was doing its job!

Lille Punkin Reviews
Nature Discovery

January 2009

Whether you consider yourself a "green" family, or just one who loves to learn, there is a special new book available to help give little ones an exciting start in their quest for knowledge of the world around them. Nature Discovery in My Backyard by The Little Environmentalists is a cute and engaging picture book designed to get curious little minds on the right path towards appreciation of nature.

This book uses the senses to help children identify and discover the things that may be living in their own backyards: trees, birds, flowers, mammals, bugs, and more! The book features a small child that kids can relate to, and the messages on each page are simple, yet open-ended enough to prompt real discussion between parents and children. There is also a section for parents in the back of the book for conducting real at-home science and nature lessons!

My kids wanted me to read this one over and over again. (And even now, I can't find the book to refer to -- they keep taking it and putting it in their library!)
